Virtually unknown apart from specialist scholars, Friedrich Julius Stahl was a leading German philosopher, professor of constitutional law, and statesman in 19th century Germany. His Christian political philosophy both impacted practical politics in a time of upheaval in Germany (around and after 1848), and influenced anti-revolutionary thinkers of subsequent generations. His work is a monument to a Germany that was overwhelmed and subsumed by the Bismarck revolution, which substituted Realpolitik for Christian tradition. His biography in English is long overdue.

Friedrich Julius Stahl was a professor of law and committed to orthodox Lutheranism - in opposition to the Prussian Union - and the Burkean ideal of government based on the recognized truths of Christianity. His origin -orthodox Judaism - was not all that unusual for these allegiances in nineteenth century Germany - one thinks of Felix Mendelssohn, for example. With the incapacitation of his patron, Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia, his influence was curtailed. One wonders what the history of the twentieth century would have been but for that!
Two volumes of his translated works have been released by the same publisher,in addition to this biography. They were written in the customary academic German of the era and require a modicum of effort for comprehension - well worth it!
