Overview
Traces the life of Alexander Hamilton, an illegitimate, largely self-taught orphan from the Caribbean who rose to become George Washington's aide-de-camp and the first Treasury Secretary of the United States.

Publishers Description
From National Book Award winner Ron Chernow, a landmark biography of Alexander Hamilton, the Founding Father who galvanized, inspired, scandalized, and shaped the newborn nation.

Ron Chernow, whom the New York Times called "as elegant an architect of monumental histories as we've seen in decades," now brings to startling life the man who was arguably the most important figure in American history, who never attained the presidency, but who had a far more lasting impact than many who did.

An illegitimate, largely self-taught orphan from the Caribbean, Hamilton rose with stunning speed to become George Washington's aide-de-camp, a member of the Constitutional Convention, coauthor of The Federalist Papers, leader of the Federalist party, and the country's first Treasury secretary. With masterful storytelling skills, Chernow presents the whole sweep of Hamilton's turbulent life: his exotic, brutal upbringing; his brilliant military, legal, and financial exploits; his titanic feuds with Jefferson, Madison, Adams, and Monroe; his illicit romances; and his famous death in a duel with Aaron Burr in July 1804.

For the first time, Chernow captures the personal life of this handsome, witty, and perennially controversial genius and explores his poignant relations with his wife Eliza, their eight children, and numberless friends. This engrossing narrative will dispel forever the stereotype of the Founding Fathers as wooden figures and show that, for all their greatness, they were fiery, passionate, often flawed human beings.

Alexander Hamilton was one of the seminal figures in our history. His richly dramatic saga, rendered in Chernow's vivid prose, is nothing less than a riveting account of America's founding, from the Revolutionary War to the rise of the first federal government.

Absolutely wonderful, poignant life of a self-made man  Mar 16, 2009
I truly enjoyed this poignant touching life of Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant and self-made man whose brilliance created the country we live in now!

An American of Uncommon Valor  Mar 12, 2009
It has been 6 weeks since I finsihed this book and few books have played on my mind more than Chernow's "Alexander Hamilton." This author has made history come alive with his writing style and insight. He avoids the common faults of so many biographies that get side-tracked and derailed from the true objective of getting to know the subject at hand.

Certainly there is speculation, but it is well supported with events and facts of the times. I doubt any serious study of American history can ignore the contributions of Alexander Hamilton .. to banking, finance, law, and the Constitution of the United States which emerges from the efforts of so many great men who at many twists and turns are embattled among themselves both philosophically and ideologically. The author paints Hamilton as a supporting actor in the American script of history whose contributions go well beyond that of many who would hold higher office in the service of the United States; and yet, one comes to understand and appreciate that absent Hamilton's contributions, this republic might be a rather short experiment in democracy.

While one may quibble about the politics and merit of all those who are elected to public office .. few can read this book and not appreciate Alexander Hamilton, the immigrant, the clerk, the law school student, the father, the less-than-perfect husband, the lawyer, the patriot; nor his selfless contributions to making this republic a viable and powerful nation, built from hard work, intelligence and new ideas.

Not only does Alexander Hamiliton entertain, educate and inform; but his errors and humanity are equally transparent in his efforts to secure good government, not for personal gain but for a much more noble purpose. Wow, it's been a long time since I felt such a high public servant met such a litmus test.

This book is a pleasure to read and ponder not only the politics of yesterday, but the politics of today .. and few will find such a faithful and loyal servant of America for Americans. I was inspired by the reading and captivated by drama. You have got to read this book and assess you own value and love of country in the context of personal and professional scarifice ..

In this age of community activists, civil rights, and concerns for the economic future of our country .. "Alexander Hamilton" by Chernow should be on everyone's "must read" list.

My favorite biography  Mar 9, 2009
This is an insightful and deeply immersing account of one of our lesser-known yet most important founders. I enjoyed every rich page of it. Ron Chernow is a business writer by training, and paints a portrait of Hamilton as the father not only our constitution but also our economic system. To understand America, you must understand Hamilton.

If there is a flaw to this book, it is the flaw most typical of biographers: Chernow falls in love with his subject. By the end of this book, Hamilton seems like a saint, his more harmful acts having been explored but subtly dismissed. For a contrasting viewpoint, see Nancy Isenberg's equally hagiographic (and nearly as fascinating) biography of Aaron Burr, Fallen Founder.

Excellent book with a lot of insight and facts  Feb 22, 2009
This book is nothing short of awesome. The author obviously put in tremendous amount of research into it, and the work that he did certainly is the best known attempt at filling the voids that history left us with.

Plain and simple, Hamilton is the man that is responsible for the way modern United States works than any other founding father. People may have different opinions on whether this is good or bad, but the bottom line is that Hamilton laid the foundation to a well oiled system that creates prosperity. At his time he was widely misunderstood simply because he was too smart for his own good. In many things he was ahead of his time, which conflicted with the view Jefferson and Republicans had of America as secluded agrarian country. He was also a fierce slavery abolitionist, which also irritated Jefferson and Madison, who, despite having uneasy opinions on slavery, compromised with their southern electorate in order to gain more political influence. All of these facts and much more, including a rare insight into Hamilton's early years, are in this book.

I don't think any other author dug out this many facts on Hamilton's life. Every claim the author makes is supported with a supporting fact or a quote. For this reason, I don't think that this book is too partisan or biased. Some authors out there try to capitalize on the fact that because Hamilton was Jefferson's arch enemy, Hamilton HAD to be wrong at least in something or even in everything. But the level of insight you will get from those authors is no match to what this book will give you. Facts do point towards Jefferson being indecisive or short sighted, including his fleeing the British army as governor of Virginia during revolutionary war, his opposition to Constitutional Convention, and his blind support of irrational policies of Robespierre's France.

I think single most important thing that this book shows is that Hamilton stood for things that he believed were right because he actually believed they were right as opposed to supporting them for political reasons. Whether this is true or not will never be known 100 percent, but I believe that it is usually much easier to criticize than to stand for something and not bend against strong opposition.
