Item Description... Overview A thoughtful, conservative viewpoint is presented for a wide range of today's hottest issues from A to Z, including guns, global warming, drugs, education, and many others. Standing up for America and conservatives nationwide, popular talk-show host Phil Valentine provides a Back to Basic Conservative Principles guide that brings the right view back to the heart of Republicans. The handsome packaging features a simulated leather hardcover with a removable half jacket.
Publishers Description WARNING: This book may inform you, humor you, or enrage you. The Conservative's Handbook provides a conservative viewpoint on a wide range of issues: guns, global warming, drugs, partial birth abortion, education, political correctness, entrepreneurs, and the wisdom of Ronald Reagan. If, as some have said, conservatives are ruled by facts and liberals by emotions, one would be hard-pressed to find a better illustration of the aphorism than popular radio talk-show host Phil Valentine's The Conservative's Handbook: Defining the Right Position on Issues from A to Z. The Conservative's Handbook provides a conservative viewpoint on a wide range of issues and ideas: - Guns
- Global warming
- Drugs
- Partial birth abortion
- Education
- Political correctness
- Entrepreneurs
- And the wisdom of Ronald Reagan.
The knowledge Valentine imparts is more than just information - it's ammunition for conservatives when they are caught up in discussions with friends and arguments with those on the Left. Many arguments between liberals and conservatives degenerate into name-calling and unsubstantiated claims. The Conservative's Handbook distills those raw emotions and extraneous thoughts into a cohesive argument for conservative principles and values, covering the full array of today's fiscal and social issues in a manner that is comprehensive without being overwhelming. |

 | Pretty good summation of the modern American Right Dec 30, 2009 |
Quite good look into the mind of the modern American Right, for what that's worth, but otherwise unremarkable. The writing style should be familiar to anyone who's ever read right-wing commentary on the internet: a condescending folksy style, no words that are too big, endless insults at "liberals" with much reference to arrogant academes/cocktail parties/private jets/Hollywood/etc, much repetition, self-pity for the endless persecution of us good white Christian folks, obsessive fear of crime and terrorism, red baiting, and a reliance on the "statement-`don't believe me?'-factoid" pattern of conversational presentation that Stephen Colbert mimics very well. In short, essentially your normal right-wing guide to life, right down to the author endlessly reminding us that this book is a totally objective look at the real world in the face of massive conspiracies against sugar, spice, and everything nice. We do learn many interesting facts throughout the book (the word "facts" is repeated a great deal, usually to obsessively contrast the stupid liberals with the author), including that George W Bush is a paragon of the noble character required of a leader, the states can pass religious qualification laws if they feel like it, there's no such thing as a "citizen of the United States" (this one borrowed from the militia movement), Unions are evil, legalizing drugs would destroy us all, every crime should be sentenced as harshly as possible with prisoners forced to work in massive labor camps, most scientists hate America and peddle global warming based on that hate, Mexicans are engaged in a fiendish plot to reconquer the Southwest, opposition to free trade is caused by xenophobia, and many other varried conspiracies against the true, good America by the infinitely stupid, infinitely powerful, infinitely evil liberals cackling at their Hollywood cocktail parties. Presumably, if you like this kind of stuff, then this book is for you, though there isn't much to distinguish it in style or tone from any other conservative manifestos from the usual talk radio and FOX News personalities (Sean Hannity even gives the intro!). And if you don't like it, you're probably one of those snobby Hollywood liberals who's just trying to advance the conspiracy, so the book wasn't written for you anyway. | | | | Expectations Dashed! Sep 16, 2009 |
I had hoped for some enlightenment, some real ideas, some explanations. Lao Tzu: know your enemy.
Not quite. Little anecdotes, with full-blown, explicit attacks on liberalism. Not even statements of conservative dogma - which is what I really expected and wanted for some education. Just more of what liberals think, why it's wrong, and what they will do to the poor, uninformed populace. Don't forget how those liberals will bring down our proud country.
Between the lines interpretation of the Constitution relative to religion. I always love that. Radio guys have the inside track on the ability to be a Constitutional scholar. To prove how much Jefferson wanted religion injected into governance, he went to church once after responding to a request from some citizens. No better proof than that!(?) Between-the-lines interpretation (to prove a point) of what the folks who were around when the Constitution was written is always entertaining.
Chapter title: "Liberalism is an idea doomed to failure". I guess that's an ideology. Kind of like describing the darkness by just stating that it's just the absence of light - then describing all the different kinds of light - fire, the sun, bulbs. Can conservatives bring their own actual ideas out to be examined? I don't think so. I don't think they can exist without an "enemy" to rail against. There's definitely a vacuum there.
My favorite is the smack-down on PC speech. This has obviously gone too far, and is also ruining our way of life. The author gives one of his illustrative anecdotes about how PC speech backfires on the simpleton liberals. In short, a woman working with Obama, prior to being elected, was asked to resign because of some comments. You can make an argument, without being there, either way about what she did. That's always easy from the outside. But what was cool, was the author's point of his little retelling seemed to be this: a person who might have been expected to believe in the whole PC speech thing was "caught" not acting that way - and asked to leave. This is painted as really bad - expecting folks to act in a certain way, and when they don't, call them on it! Expectations given, but not attained equals consequences. Mr. Valentine seems to think that's a problem with liberals, and ironic. So, my inference would be: as a conservative, if I was expected to live up to some expectation and didn't - no harm, no foul - those are only suggestions for behavior - live them as you wish. A good blueprint for hypocrisy.
If you're looking for something with some substantial arguments for conservatism, go elsewhere. Maybe this doesn't exist. Maybe it IS just a vacuum. Disappointing, pretzel logic, and a foreword by the liar Sean Hannity! Glad I bought it used, I wouldn't want the author of this tripe to get any of my hard-earned cash! | | | | Every Conservative Should Commit to Reading Feb 16, 2009 |
| Do you know that you are a conservative but have a hard time articulating why? You know you disagree with liberals on the key issues, but you are at a loss for words when it comes to defending your actual views? Well, no more! On issues from A to Z Phil Valentine brilliantly articulates the official conservative viewpoint and gives easy to remember facts and arguments to pocket for a later debate. The Conservative's Handbook covers everything from why US capitalism should not fund China's oppressive regime, to answers to the illegal immigration nightmare, from the breakdown of the traditional family, to the unimaginable horror of partial birth abortion. Not a cover-to-cover read, but one you will enjoy thumbing through at your leisure, picking topics that spark your curiosity. You'll return to it's pages over and over again. | | | | The Hillbilly Ten Commandments Jan 27, 2009 |
No Skill Phil is at it again. More ramblings from a college drop out. Unca Phil uses he vitriol and hate speech to incite readers to kick out non whites, destroy the environment and a engage in a bunch of other wingnut behaviors. Basically a combination of lunatic McCarthyism, Fascism and Xenophobia from a redneck who is illogical and boring and hypocritical.
If you are a conservative, more power to you. But there are a lot of legitimate conservative authors out there with a lot of intelligent things to say with respect to the dangers of the left's agenda. Phil, unfortunately is not one of them so look elsewhere. In fact, this redneck represents the very of conservative thinking and has weakened the cause substantially. Don't waste your time reading this trash. And if you must, check out a copy from the library. You will be glad you didn't waste a nickel on the ravings of this as yet unmedicated imbecile.

| This book is just a second edition of the first writing of the book "Right from the Heart" written in 2003.......only the title has been changed. What a rip off! Shame on you Phil Valentine for trying to dup readers by publishing your book a second time under a different title! | | | Write your own review about The Conservative's Handbook: Defining the Right Position on Issues from A to Z
