 | Problem with the thesis Oct 27, 2008 |
Very well written book.
There is only 1 problem with the proposal to welcome skilled immigration. People with higher education ofter rather stay in their home countries as Latin countries have very classist societies where the few educated live with incredible preferences over the most prone to emmigrate mayorities due to corurpted governments and corporations.
The sad part is the the USA govenrmnemt has for decades encouraged the status quo of these countries for political conveniency, sometimes even interveening militarily into those such as Chile, Argentina, Panamá. A more comprehensive aproach to the problem is needed to encompass a true possible solution but I believe such aproach is again invonvenient not for the people of the USA but for its government so It will be avoided officially. | | | | eye opening look at U.S. immigration Sep 17, 2008 |
Writing this review, I see that there is one one-star review, the reviewer claiming that there are no hard facts in the book and that the writers are ignorant. That is certainly not the case. The first chapter reads that way, but the rest certainly contains a great deal of numbers and facts. You learn that Mexico's second largest source of income comes in the form of remittances (Mexican emigrants sending money back home from the U.S.) totaling $24 billion. There are 11-12 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. While welfare dependency has gone down for blacks about 12% and whites about 6.5% in a recent ten year period, welfare use for Hispanics went up 30% in that same period. There are so many facts in this book, it's ludicrous to claim that there aren't.
And the book certainly isn't against immigration. Anyone that's into economics knows that immigration, done correctly, is great for the receiving society, gaining much needed skills from abroad. It mentions Australia's great immigration policy as an example of success. What this book says, is that our current inadequate free immigration/welfare state policy, increasingly propelled by fear of being seen as racists or xenophobes, is not beneficial to the U.S. economy, the immigrants (legal and illegal), and our progress towards becoming a more and more knowledge based economy. | | | | liberal...definetly not Feb 22, 2008 |
| this book claims to be a liberal look at the immigration problem. there are no hard facts, the authors are biased and a bit racist. they claim that the Hispanic community is plaguing America. this book is not liberal, maybe ignorant liberal but that's it. waste of time. | | | | The Illegal Immigration Crisis is Almost Out of Control Jan 30, 2008 |
In the introduction of this well argued collection of essays, Myron Magnet points out how the illegal immigrant advocates engage in an Orwellian misuse of language. They describe themselves as "pro-immigration" and not defenders of law breaking. The Late Milton Friedman warned, "that you can't have free immigration and a welfare state." Rarely, if ever, in our nation's past did immigrants receive welfare benefits. Illegitimacy rates were low and the newest residents desperately attempted to improve their lot in life. Today's illegal immigrants, especially within the Hispanic community, are often anti-intellectual and hostile towards the very idea of assimilating into the wider American community. A dangerous permanent underclass is turning many of our cities and towns into dystopian hell holes. Many well meaning people are so intimidated by the false charge of racism and "nativism" that they prefer to pretend the problem really doesn't exist. The intellectual virus of political correctness regretfully dominates the discussion. Rational and dispassionate dialogue is often near impossible. Sadly, many Hispanic citizens are also guilt tripped into believing they owe something to these illegal residents. The situation is only getting worse. Time may not be on our side. We obviously are not going to shoot and mistreat the illegals. It is best that we instead find realistic solutions to resolve the crisis. This book offers some excellent recommendations.
The MSM hides the brutal truth from the American people. Few realize that the Mexican government, for instance, hypocritically encourages its own citizens to enter our country illegally---while it treats its own illegal immigrants like subhuman creatures. This is a relatively short book of only 183 pages and an index. It is perhaps the best book available for those who desire to acquire a better understanding of this issue in a relatively short period of time. You need to especially read The Immigration Solution before voting in November. | | | | Campaign to send a copy of the book to every Politician and Lawmaker!! Jan 18, 2008 |
Let us all start a campaign to send a copy of this book to every Politician and Lawmaker to make sure that they read this and understand how deeply the people in general care about issue of illegal immigration.
It seems all the politicians are out of touch with reality, either because they are too arrogant or just corrupt and have been bought out by the corporate world.
By getting a copy of this book from there constituent, there is a possibility that they may read it and have some understanding of the challenges people face and hopefully we can force them to not grant Amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants here.
