Story Behind the Book

“Three key experiences in my life have come together to make this book a reality. First, as the pastor of a local church for thirteen years, I have had the privilege of visiting people who are facing imminent death, conducting funerals, and ministering to grieving families. During these times people often have probing questions about life after death. Second, due to my interest and writing in the area of Bible prophecy, I am frequently asked questions about the afterlife at conferences and via e-mail. Third, all kinds of books, TV shows, and groups out there today are fostering unbiblical views of life after death. Knowing that this is a subject of universal interest and great confusion, I have a passionate desire to create a user-friendly, clear, straightforward resource to answer all the key questions that people everywhere are asking about life’s greatest mystery.”

rather powerless answers to powerful questions   Feb 3, 2008
The author has done a lot of research and used a great deal of scripture in this book, hence I have given it a three-star rating rather than one or two stars. Although there is a whole lot of doctrine, (which revealed his persuasion even before I looked at his bio. to have it confirmed) there is no power of the Holy Spirit in his writing. It is as a scribe writing with facts and learned material and not as one led of the Spirit of the Lord who speaks with authority. Also, it bothers me a great deal that he can pick and choose whose spiritual experience he believes to be true (i.e. D.L. Moody or Billy Graham's grandmother) while discounting others who have had similar experiences given to them. I am fearful that, true to his doctrinal position, he believes that the Holy Spirit is silent in this age and that He has ceased to bring divine revelation to the true ones who follow Jesus and do His will (just as Jesus promised He would). Although there are indeed deceived people who have written false accounts of seeing certain phenomona during a near-death experience, God has, no doubt, given some a supernatural experience to change their lives eternally as well as those who they will influence. This author needs to remember that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He still speaks. He still reveals. The only thing that has changed in these 2,000 years is us, not Him!

Answers complex questions with precision  Dec 30, 2005
The thought of death fills many Christians and nonbelievers with fear, that they try to avoid thinking or talking about the topic altogether. But sooner or later, everyone must face death. So, what happens after we die? In this slim volume, Mark Hitchcock offers an enlightening view of life after death.

In 55 short chapters, Hitchcock, a pastor and prophecy expert, examines questions most people have asked at some point: What is death? Where do people go when they die? What is heaven like? Throughout the book, Hitchcock uses Scripture references to answer the questions he poses. Hitchcock does not pull any punches in addressing his topics, particularly heaven and hell. "In Matthew 25:46, both heaven and hell are described as `eternal,'" Hitchcock writes. His answers are in-depth, but not preachy, and many of the book's chapters seldom extend beyond three pages.

55 Answers to Questions about Life After Death is a fast-paced, easy-to-read volume that readers will find difficult to put down. Hitchcock's book will undoubtedly jar some readers, but it will do so while answering complex questions with precision. -- James Hendrix, Ph.D., Christian Book Previews.com
