Item Description... Overview The author relates how her experiences trying to overcome addictions has helped her be more self-aware, embrace her ethnic identity, and accept her sexual orientation.
Publishers Description
'This is the story of my ch . . . ch . . . changes, which took me from insanity to clarity, from egocentricity to altruism, from alcoholism to activism. These changes have marked an evolution in what I want from this life. I am what I want. What I seek to consume, possess, and achieve is a mirror that reflects my lusts and cravings, values and priorities, and moral boundaries or lack thereof. I am happy to say that what I want today is much less toxic and self-centered than what I used to want. It's taken decades of selfexamination to peel back the layers and figure out what really makes me happy. And while I'm still searching for my ultimate bliss, I know for sure it's not what I once thought it was. It's not alcohol, cigarettes, money, food, sugar, or status symbols: I've consumed all of those in massive quantities, and they've just made me miserable. Now, I want what can't be tasted, smoked, worn, seen, or counted. It's the opposite of material. As sappy as it might sound, what I want is spiritual.' --From the Introduction In iWant, Jane Velez-Mitchell shares her candid and engaging story of the true adventure of her life, a journey of self-discovery that is still in full throttle. As she searches for the ultimate joy and freedom that come from living a compassionate life, she challenges all of us to learn from her examples to end destructive behaviors and embrace a meaningful existence alongside one another. |

| This used book came to me in a timely way and in the condition advertised. It's an interesting story and easy to read. The author gives honest and revealing insight into her addictive personality and how she has learned, in healthy ways, to manage, the Best Within.. with all it's manifestations. | | | | She forgot ... Jan 22, 2010 |
I'm so proud of Jane Velez-Mitchell's ongoing recovery, but she essentially borrows from, and uses the AA program and Big Book to endorse her own particular views and life story. AA does not endorse anything. It's part of its preamble. The danger here is that someone reading her story might get the idea that AA's program of recovery has to lead very closely to Velez-Mitchell's journey of self discovery.
In fact, the AA program as outlined in the Big Book is very very flexible. The only requirement to be a member of AA is a desire to stop drinking. Yes it is a spiritual journey involving a higher power, but that power is not defined by AA and can only be defined effectively by each individual going through recovery.
I urge anyone looking for help with alcohol or drug addiction to find meeting and turn to a copy of the Big Book (available at this site, and usually for sale at cost through any AA chapter) rather than any one person's, for-profit story. | | | | Traditions & Humility Jan 2, 2010 |
Another Celeb making money off of Alcoholics Anonymous.
I have had great respect for Jane Valez-Mitchel and that is why I am so disappointed in her decision to completely disregard the AA Traditions over and over again by revealing that she is a member of Alcoholics Anonymous and using that to sell her book and make money off of AA. I would think that somebody with that much sober time would know better.
I can understand the dilemma posed by being a celebrity or in the media and how difficult it would be to not share about something that saved your life. However, it is just not their or my job to do so at the level of press radio or film.
The motivating factor here is simply ego and not the humility that this Tradition calls for with the intent of preserving the fellowship for future candidates. I hope Jane will consider this and have an open mind about my thoughts. I personally feel that an amend is due to the recovered community. We stay anonymous in effort to ensure our future survival and to practice humility. Breaking this might be brave but at the expense of thousands. Just say you are sober and get help. That's it.
Lastly, I feel that some can become addicted to self-help and labels. They attend various programs but fail to commit to one. They have to "be different" by labeling themselves by being gay, vegan activist and so on. Awareness on these topics is fine, however, many times it becomes just another way for the alcoholic to separate or or isolating from the rest of the world when we ought to be aiming to be a part of it. | | | | Good writing, and keeps you interested Jan 2, 2010 |
| I was quite surprised when I started reading this book....its really great....its good writing and put into parts so if you dont want to read it from start to finish you dont have to or you can refer back to certain parts easly...Its a very good read...I had a dad with this addition.and she puts some very good information together to make me see how he as her dad could never get sober.or live the sober lifestyle.I guess as they say it takes someone who nos where youve been to understand and she made me see things in a different light after all these years..my dad died of Cirrosis of the liver....hers of lung cancer....I have to say I was enveyious of her childhood......and her parents.....but as we all no who have had addicts in our lives or are addicts.....it always looks better on the outside than living in it with the elephant in the room no one talks about. This isnt a hurtful book full of blame and anger and what ifs....I like and respect that....its as if she were at the dining room table or kitchen table talking to you over a cup of coffee .....just one on one....ive not read many books like that about peoples Bios..so id say she takes the simpler and honest life to heart in the way this is written.....its not about someone on tv we see nightly....its about someone like you and me who have addicts in our lifes or are one and gratefully recovering......Im so glad I took a chance and got this book..even if you read it at the library....just set back and have a good read....theres something in it for anyone who has an addiction...or lives with someone who is...or was..and the other things she struggled with to get to no her true self ....and she is Grateful and has worked very very hard as all of us do on our daily struggles of addictions and acceptance of ourselves ,One Day at a Time..Thank you for being so honest with us Jane.....B.W. | | | | Sparked My Interest Dec 17, 2009 |
I also didn't know who Jane Velez-Mitchell was. I enjoy reading books on addiction and recovery and this book "sparked my interest" as my title states. I haven't read any books of this type recently. However I think that this book was completely honest and heartful. I especially like how she integrates the 12 step program into her life and is able to continue living it. I applaud anyone who is able to recount their past, organize it, sort out what was wrong and fix it. Her life experiences were interesting and I'm really surprised she is still alive and in good health after all she's been through. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who suffers from any kind of addition and wants to read a nitty-gritty story of hope and recovery.
