 | Intelligent Criticism of the FairTax by a Right-Wing Talk Radio Host Apr 20, 2009 |
I normally cannot stand Hugh Hewitt, but good for him for writing this book exposing some of the ridiculous myths propogated about the FairTax over the years by the likes of Neal Boortz, Sean Hannity, Herman Cain, John Linder, et. al.
In his book, Hewitt carefully goes through the many reasons the FairTax is such a bad idea, including:
1. The tax rate will be way too high (much higher than the 23% promised by the FairTax proponents). The tax rate would need to be at least 30%, but really over 50%.
2. The FairTax will be easy to avoid by anyone with an IQ higher than a rock. Anyone could simply buy a used car or an existing home tax-free, but the rich could avoid the FairTax by buying private jets as "business expenses" and multi-million ocean-front homes in the Bahamas.
3. Even if the tax avoidance issue could be adequately resolved, the FairTax would crush the middle class, particularly retirees. Notwithstanding the claims of the FairTax proponents, prices would rise significantly under the FairTax. Think health care, for instance. Under the FairTax you will be taxed on the full cost of your health insurance, which will cost us all several thousand dollars a year just on taxes on basic health insurance.
The irony is why this book is even needed, because nothing Hewitt says is new. Virtually every economist, government agency, policy group and newspaper editorial board from the right to the left that has studied the FairTax over the last decade has pointed out the same (and many more) flaws with the FairTax. But none of those criticisms have sunk in because all such criticisms have been totally ignored or distorted by the Boortz's, the Hannity's, and the Cain's of the airways. So people who follow the FairTax, who are often talk-radio listeners, have only gotten one very distorted side of the story.
Now that a fellow right-wing radio host has pointed out that the emperor has no clothes, maybe, just maybe, some of the FairTax supporters will finally open their eyes to the truth, realize they've been bamboozled for years by the FairTax proponents, and, hopefully, start looking for an honest tax reform plan to support.
