Good work - but missed some major ideas  Mar 24, 2010
While I highly recommend this book, at the same time I have to point out that the author missed some very important concepts that currently affect the thinking of many Christians. One in particular stands out. The author failed to mention the impact that dispensational theology currently has on many evangelical and fundamentalist Christians. The theology produces false dualistic dichotomies that result in a similar Platonic dualism which Eberle describes in his book. This theology often leads to rejecting the idea that we should be active in cultural transformation. As famous dispensationalist D.L. Moody used to say regarding cultural involvement, "Don't polish the brass on a sinking ship!" Many dispensationalists reason that we should not try to reform culture since prophecy teaches it is a lost cause - as dispensational authors like Dave Hunt and John Mac Arthur advocate. This reasoning is not scriptural and leads to a fatalistic view of the future for the church. It has resulted in Christians handing the cultural institutions and their children's education to the pagans. (See Henzel's "Darby, Dualism and the Decline of Dispensationalism".) I agree with the author that Christians need to develop a holistic biblical worldview. However, he does not present a tangible way of developing one. While the author may not agree with some of the ideas that came from the Reformation, such as the depraved nature of fallen human beings, he unfairly paints what Calvin and other Augustinian reformers meant by this view and its relation to Common Grace. While the Reformers theology was not perfect, it did result in the cultural transformation of Europe and the downfall of tyrannical governments. It also laid the cultural foundations for America and our Constitutional form of government (See "Who Are We? by Samuel Huntington). The historic overview of the impact of Greek Gnostic thought on the church made the purchase of this book worthwhile. The author is on the right track and I look forward to reading his future works. My only recommendation is that he study the worldview that came out of the Reformation more closely, especially that of John Calvin. Calvin's presupposition was that if Jesus is Lord of the universe, then how does Biblical revelation instruct us as to how we are supposed to live in this earthly life? We couldn't ask for a better approach toward articulating a holistic biblical worldview that establishes the lordship of God in all of life. This Reformed worldview eventually transformed both the church and the culture in Europe and America (See "Calvin in the Public Square" by David Hall). The recent Time Magazine article describing the renewed interest of Calvin by university students across the nation is a healthy sign. It would appear that God has to raise up a new generation of church leaders among our youth that are open to seeking the truth - where ever it leads. However, they need to realize that past church history teaches that the church leaders currently in power will fight the next move of God.

Valuable Resource For Radical Thinking  Mar 14, 2010
Christianity Unshackled.

Harold Erbele's book is a valuable resource for Christians to see why they think the way they do. For a long time now I have been challenged to view God's Word and Life itself from a Hebrew mindset. This takes some work but is essential to grasp the Biblical Worldview. Asked by many, How do I do this? I answer read the first five book of the Bible, Genesis to Dueteronomy, and study the culture. As I do I am seeing a major shift in the way I think.

People say, but the New Testament was written in Greek, yes it was, but it was written to with Hebrew mindset, largely to a Hebrew mind. What we do, is define the meanings of words, but words without a conceptual framework, become clinical, and thus abstract. Let me give an example: What does the word Messiah mean? To which all reply, anointed! Yes that is true, but it is also wrong. The Hebrew mind understands that one anointed in their world was anointed for a reason, either as a Prophet, Priest or King. In the case of Messiah, it means the anointed Prophet, Priest and King. A simple definition may be right but without function its 90% wrong.

This book will be a great help in teaching you to see how the Greek world has permeated our thinking, through education, both secular and christian, and hindered us from understanding God's Word and the World, biblically.
