Camouflaged Dispensationalist Theology  Nov 22, 2009
I bought this "Dictionary of Premillennial Theology" as I was preparing to write a report on HIstoric Dispensationalism. Little did I know that this book, while titled in a way that makes it appear to be theologically neutral, actually was written from an almost entirely Dispensational perspective. Only after I read The Meaning of the Millennium: Four Views which outlines the difference in eschatological views did I see the underlying presuppositions that build the arguments these authors make.

Dispensationalism, simply stated from an eschatological perspective, is the idea that the Father offered Jesus, the Messiah, only to the Jews at His first coming. After the Jews rejected the Messiah by killing Him, salvation was then given to the gentiles, and thus we have the church age. Jesus will one day return, take --read: rapture -- the Gentile church, and the ethnically Jewish people will once again have an opportunity to accept the Messiah. This is the eschatology that the popular "Left Behind" series was built on.

After comparing the theological claims and presuppositions which Dispensationalism requires, I do not think that it is consistent with scripture on many levels (especially Romans 11:17-24). That fact that this book is filled with Dispensationalist theology and yet offers no warning really bothers me and drove me to write this review.

Be warned, customer. An egg is not always an egg.

A Book I Regularly Buy for Others  Jul 20, 2009
You'd be surprised at how many theological heavyweights Couch compiled to assist him in forming what I believe should be a companion piece to any beginning seminary or bible college class on theology, dispensational or otherwise. The articles on the history of hermeneutics, both reformed and otherwise, by Dallas Seminary's Gordon Johnston should be required reading. Ryrie, Showers, Johnson, Tan, Thomas, Price...the list just goes on and on. If you want dispensational straw men under the guise of a "critique", read Gerstner's "Wrongly Dividing the Word of Truth," but if you want to know what dispensationalists actually believe, then read this book.

Great Premillennial Reference Work  Apr 21, 2001
This is a must for anyone who desires a better understanding of eschatology from a Dispensational perspective. It is an accurate, articulate, easy to use reference that can be used by scholar and laymen alike.

A Rare Gem!  Jul 27, 1999
A concise but complete reference. Quickly becoming a "frequently used" eschatology source which does not sit idle on my shelf. Definitely a 'must buy' for those studying the Rapture. John O'Brien Baptist Missionary in Kharkov, Ukraine

A must have on any serious Christians' book shelf !  Dec 14, 1998
I've read this book cover to cover and found that this book is long over due for the serious disciple. The authors give a fair and complete treatment of the topics discussed with opposing views taken into consideration. I found this read to be very enjoyable and informative. I would highly recommend this book to seminary students and bible scholars as well as the committed Christian as a must have. I paid full price at the time of publishing, and it was worth every penny...this site's price is fair and reasonable for a long over due reference treatment of premillenial theology. Absolutely excellent book (but get the hard bound edition, this is no paper back by any means), you'll refer to it time and again.... enjoy. bob
