Publishers Description

Three supernatural gifts. Two thousand years of division. One moment of truth.
Hannah's head hung, long brown hair in her eyes. Her face felt pasty with cold and fatigue and pain. Arms behind her back, she sat in a chair, wrists and ankles tied to the wooden frame, chair legs bolted to the floor.
A cold car.
A gun.
Horror. Pain. Grief. Screaming.
A windshield blistering with holes.
It all came over her like a flood. A pouring out of pictures in her mind. But then there was one more thing. Not an image, but a feeling--that half a continent away someone else had felt it all happening too.
The Firstborn--three ancient religious orders gifted with the ability to see past, present, and future--have been divided since the death of Christ. But today, in an era of terrorism and globalization, it has become clear there is an atrocity coming that they must unite to prevent because it is one of them who will perpetrate it.
Savage intrigue and a violent power struggle set the stage for three members of the Firstborn as they race against time through a labyrinth of deception and danger to save the lives of hundreds...

Definitely Worth Reading  May 20, 2010
This is not my usual genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's got all the intrigue of a Dan Brown, with less likelihood of offending people, and a delightful hint of fantasy. It was a quick and exciting read, and I can't wait for the next.
Confusing to me, but still recommended  May 19, 2010
Hmmm...this was....well...interesting. Definitely not like something I've read before. Conlan Brown's The Firstborn was his debut novel and while the plotline was skillfully created, I was often confused at the events. It seemed a bit too jumpy for my liking.

Despite my confused thoughts on this novel, it does have that fast-paced, gripping suspense. The plot is thought-provoking with spiritual lessons and follows the basis of doing God's will above all else, not what WE want to do. A powerful message in itself, for sure. It does have the true-to-life events in the world today, added to the story. Though confusing and jumpy to me, I easily read it in one day.

So, with those things being said, I give this book a 3.5 star rating. I don't normally give .5 star ratings but in this case, do to it confusing me, I couldn't give it 4 or 5 stars, but the authors efforts for his debut novel are skillful and talented, I couldn't give it a flat 3 star rating. If you aren't easily confused (could be that I was born blonde!) and like the fast paced thrillers then Conlan Brown's The Firstborn is a must read for you! I am ready to dive into book 2, The Overseer to see if I can enjoy that one better!

Incredible  Mar 17, 2010
This is a fun, thought-provoking, well-written work that is definitely worth reading. Amazingly, even at a young age, Brown has managed to write an incredible first novel that is a great example of how to tell good stories, with varied, likable characters. I hope to see more novels from this author in the future.
A Page-Turning Thirller  Jan 4, 2010
Conlan Brown hit a definite homerun with his debut supernatural thrill The Firstborn. From the first page, when Conlan Brown opened with the heart-pounding action as the main character, Devin Bathurst, fights for his life while trying to save the life of an unnamed girl who is in mortal danger, I was hooked. The premise of the story is that the firstborn have been gifted with the ability to see the past, present, and the future. Instead of using their God-given gifts to help their fellow man, they're torn by infighting, power struggles, and mistrust. If they can set their differences aside and serve God by using the abilities he's given them, they may be able to stop the slaughter of innocent lives. Through gripping storytelling, Conlan does an excellent job of drawing the reader in and making the plot unfold in a way that makes the reader unsure about what will happen next.

While all the characters were interesting, I especially liked the complexity of Devin Bathurst and John Temple. Their combination of strength and sensitivity made both the characters believable as well as likeable. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
3.5 Stars . . . Imaginative & Insightful  Oct 1, 2009
I always love discovering debut authors, and I believe Conlan Brown will be one to keep an eye on in the coming years. "The Firstborn" is nicely packaged, and once again the folks at Realms have come up with a great cover. The premise, too, is full of intrigue, following the current tribulations of those bodies raised from their graves at the time of Christ's crucifixion, as noted in the Gospel of Matthew.

With great anticipation--maybe too much--I dove into this story. Although there's little space given to setting or atmosphere, Brown does a good job of pulling us in at the onset. He shows a keen sense of pacing throughout, keeping pages turning as we discover the layers of the Firstborn and their three warring factions. Each is gifted with an ability--to see past, present, or future--and each has a role to play. Unfortunately, they've allowed petty differences to divide them, distracting them from their mission of unity and love.

Devin Bathurst is one of these Firstborn, as is John Temple. The story's impetus comes through their development, even as the factions are at each others' throats. There's some muted love interest, but most of the action revolves around gunfights. Personally, I was more intrigued by the interplay between the characters and factions. I had some disappointment, though, because the mythos behind the Firstborn never goes much deeper than their giftings. I can only hope a sequel is in the works, to explore this aspect further.

That said, there are some amazing parallels here between the Firstborn and the Church of today. While Christians bicker and look for faults with one another, they forget their overall purpose. It's a theme that's developed pointedly through this story, and it'll be interesting to see how Brown's craft develops. Considering this is only his first novel, I believe his future is bright.
