Eagerly Awaiting Katie Couric's Candid Revelations  Dec 13, 2009
When Katie Couric eventually sits down to pen her autobiography, I suspect that she will reveal that she was beset by that indigenous female medical condition, Pre-Menstral Syndrome, whenever she had the opportunity to interview such Republican luminaries as Bob Dole or Sarah Palin. She will also reveal that if only she had put away her ben-wa when interviewing Barack Obama, she might have asked questions half as tough-minded as those she posed to Sarah Palin.

But in the mean time, we have Mr. Goldberg's book to provide us with insights into the journalistic process. I suspect that it will render her autobiography superfluous.

A very interesting book and a rather alarming read  Dec 4, 2009
Bernie Goldberg has been a noted journalist since the mid-1970s, winning many awards including ten Emmies for journalism. In this book, Mr. Goldberg looks at how the mainstream American media has embraced Barack Obama to the point of surrendering their already dwindling stocks of credibility amongst their viewers. Everything is covered in detail, as the media's bias and lack of objectivity is laid bare in excruciating detail.

Overall, I must say that I found this to be a very interesting book, and a rather alarming read. The Founding Fathers of the United States believed that an independent press is necessary to the proper functioning of the government, but this book shows that the press has themselves retreated from independence and have become mouthpieces for certain select people. If you want to see the depths to which the U.S. media has sunk then you must get this book, in which a genuine insider shows you exactly what is going on.

Note: Audio Review - Bernie DIDN'T Narrate His Own Book - Too BAD!  Nov 17, 2009
Some authors butcher their work by insisting on narrating the audio version of their books when they have no talent for such.....not so Bernie Goldberg. He's a pro....a ten time Emmy Award winning broadcast correspondent for CBS, a nationally recognized commentator. In short, he knows what he's doing. Why didin't he do it here? I made the mistake of picking up the audio book without looking to make certain Bernie read his own work. His clever writing style practically mandates his narrating the books he writes. He didn't in this case and it ruined the book. No slap at Alan Sklar who provided his usual journeyman's effort as narrator, but it just wasn't the same without Bernie reading his own work. It's not unlike asking your local librarian to perform aloud Ann Coulter's latest book....it ain't the same.

As for content, the truth is that any reasonably attentive news junkie could have written this book. Bernie really didin't tell me anything here I didin't already know. It was a bit unnerving to hear it chronicled, one example after another, though. The liberal press made a mockery of journalism last year with their wretchingly lopsided coverage of the presidential election. I'm not a Sean Hannity fan, but he was right when he said journalism finally died in 2008. It's unfortunate but with the rise of talk radio and conservative cable TV, the once thinly vaniered objectivism of the mainstream press simply vanished. It is as though the mainstream said, "if they don't need to conceal their conservatism, no need to mask our liberalism." And, boy did they go all out for Obama. The country is much the worse for it.

I very much enjoyed Bernie's first three books: Bias, Arrogance, and 100 Peopole Who Are Screwing Up America, but this one fell well short of those works. Again, it may have had more to do with his not narrating his own work (anything Bill Bryson writes that he doesn't narrate falls flat, too) than anything else. Nevertheless, there was nothing new here. Better luck next time, Bernie.

A Worthwhile Analysis by a Veteran Reporter and Analyst  Nov 1, 2009
I just finished reading "A Slobbering Love Affair" by Bernie Goldberg. I read his New York Times #1 bestselling book "Bias" quite a few years ago and found it a fascinating and eye-opening inspection of the news media. In his current book, Goldberg turns this analyst's critical eye on the media during the last presidential election.

Goldberg is certainly no novice to the news business. He spent over 30 years as a TV news reporter, mostly with CBS News, and is currently a media analyst with Fox News. He has authored four bestselling books, has won six Emmy awards for his reporting at CBS News and three for his reports for the critically acclaimed HBO program Real Sports, which also earned him the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award for broadcast journalism. Suffice it to say, you can bet this guy is no Jimmy Olsen, cub reporter for the Daily Planet!

Whether or not the mainstream media has a strong liberal bias is no longer a question worth discussing, as they have themselves proudly admitted they do. In this book, Goldberg sets out to expose the fact that their reporting is not only bias, but during the 2008 presidential campaign they crossed over an important journalistic line from their usual liberal bias to publicly becoming political partisans for one of the candidates--Senator Obama. According to Goldberg, the mainstream news has moved from the good-old-days of Edward R. Murrow when they were the guardians of critical news reporting and analysis to a point of blatantly launching an unparalleled effort to ensure their candidate was elected. This was simply too much for a veteran newshound like Goldberg to just stand by and do nothing.

Though a relatively short book, Goldberg provides the reader with statistical comparisons, articles, interviews, and behind the scenes newsroom activism in such detail as to compile a veritable wall of evidence. In this book, Goldberg reveals "how the media ignored, downplayed or sanitized the rantings of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Obama's long-standing "spiritual" adviser, and the radicalism of former terrorist (and Obama associate) Bill Ayers" as evidence the media's clear and inexcusable partiality in the 2008 election. He also includes Obama's association with the corrupt ACORN group as an example of not only the mainstream media's silence on this matter, but also Obama's own refusal cooperation with investigations into his association with ACORN in Chicago. Goldberg provided even more through statistical evidence of how the media failed in its role as an objective bystander by slanting the positive and negative reporting on the Obama-McCain campaigns to such a startling extreme--75% to 25%, in some cases.

Here is a sample quote from the book:

"I ran into Pat at a political conference in Florida nine days after the 2008 election (Pat Caddell, popular political pollster turned pundit). I asked for his thoughts about the mainstream media. They were more biased than ever; he said, before launching into a bit of history to put the current mess into perspective. There is one institution in America which has no checks and balances, he told me. And that is the press. And there was a reason for that. It wasn't that the Founding Fathers loved the press. It was because the press was supposed to protect the country. That's why Jefferson said, `I would much rather have newspapers without a government than a government without newspapers.' But when the media leave the ramparts and become a partisan outrider for one party or the other or one candidate or the other, essentially deciding who should be president and who should not be president, what truth people should know and what truth they should not know, then what they become, what they constitute is a threat to democracy."

Here is a sample of Goldberg's wrap-up:

"And that, my friends is why the corruption of the media matters. The press has constitutional protections for one main reason: To keep watch over a powerful government The fundamental job of journalists is to look out for us--the American people! If nobody cares what the press says, journalists will be watchdogs in name only. That is what can happen when the media, like that liberal professor at American University in Washington, believe that their role is no simply to report the news, fairly and accurately, but to effect their kind of change in society. This time they really screwed up!"

A peculiar and apparent weakness of Goldberg's book is its lack of noted resource material. None of his material is footnoted. Though he does generally identify the sources and quotes within the text, either by name, document or the occasion, it would seem prudent and helpful to the reader (as well as to answer the myriad of questions from his critics) if his sources were recorded at the bottom of the appropriate page, or at least in an End Notes format at the back of the book.

Goldberg's blunt, "cut straight to the point" style has made him a lightning rod for controversy, and this new provocative book is no exception. Love him or loathe him, you will first have to address the myriad of details and facts he brings to the table with this book before you can just dismiss and label him a two-bit hack, as a number of reviewers of this book have.

Take a fair look at Goldberg's analysis. And please don't miss the Media Research Center's extensive summary (Appendix) of how the media treated Barack Obama from the time of his debut on the national stage up through his victory in the Democratic primaries. A copy of MRC's Executive Summary is included in the book. It is very revealing and is curiously never challenged or even mentioned in any of the negative reviews of this book.

The Title Drew Me In!  Oct 30, 2009
In his well written book, "A Slobbering Love Affair," television news reporter, Bernard Goldberg, says of the press, "...Make no mistake: this is not the same old liberal bias we have witnessed for years. In 2008, the mainstream media crossed a line. As a result, their credibility is in tatters. Hardly anyone trusts them anymore. This is not good for them, of course. But may be even worse for us." The book came out in January of 2009, but is still relevant at the end of the year. We have three more years of Obama's power hungry, crooked, incompetency to live with. Because it summed up the Media's nauseating love affair with their finally arrived savior, the title drew me in. Goldberg's humor and accurate assessment of the media's coverage of the election kept me interested.

The book's author asked Rush Limbaugh, "How long will the honeymoon between Obama and mainstream media last?" Limbaugh replied, "Forever! He is to big to fail!" That is the really scary part. We have the most crooked and incompetent president imaginable and while the economy of this country goes belly up the press will act like it's all Bush's fault, but refuse to report honestly on any of the president's numerous incompetent actions. The American people voted this morally bankrupt, totally incompetent man into office. They got what they ask for and now the results of the choices will come back to haunt them. The sub prime mortgage crisis started with Bush. I'm sure that it somehow has it's roots in another morally bankrupt president, Clinton. But wherever it first started, Obama has simply continued throwing trillions of dollars of bailout money, which we do not have to spend, on correcting the problem. In other words, Obama is conducting business as usual. You do not continue doing what got you into a mess and expect to fix the problem. Evan though I was no Bush fan, Obama is an even more incompetent leader than his predecessor.

Also, I totally agree with Goldberg that the media's slobbering love affair with Obama didn't lose McCain the election. Several other factors caused that to happen. Read the book and find out the rest of the details.
